The Ups and Downs and all Arounds

I have not wrote in a long time.  So first I want to apologize, and give you a little update.  I went back to work full time as a social worker and I am loving every bit of it.
-In the month of August we held the first annual Great Glasses Play Day in Wichita, KS.  Jaxen was our spot light child.  There were about 40 people that came to support and celebrate.  There were about 13 kids with glasses and/or some kind of vision related problem.

-September was a little scary for this Momma, we had our first pressure check completed and Jaxen's first pressure was a 30 which is high.  They want him to be between a 10-21.  During that pressure check he was calm and relaxing.  That was also the first visit with our contact specialist, Dr. Rose.  Dr. Rose told us to keep our appointment that we had with Dr. Whitfill that was in two weeks.  When Jaxen and I went to see Dr. Whitfill he took Jaxen's pressure and it was a 24 and he was very resistant, screaming, yelling and fighting.  When children act that way during a pressure check it makes it higher than where it is supposed to be at.  Dr. Whitfill said that Jaxen's pressure was good considering the circumstances and resistance that Jaxen gave them.  Dr. Whitfill explained that at the last pressure check they probably did not get the pen in the cornea, and probably got the outer edge of Jaxen's eye.

-October was a great month for our family and vision!! YAY!!! Jaxen was even a monster for Halloween!!

-November, was not a very good month for vision in our family.  Jaxen got a cold and when a child has a cold the weakest part of their body is targeted first.  Jaxen's eye turned red and he was rubbing his eye constantly.  So, I went to the medicine cabinet and got out some eye drops.  I got the wrong eye drop medication for my little special eyed guy! I got the eye drops for Redness, which is what his circumstances were.  Come to find out with my little ones aphakic contact lense, Visine for Redness, acts as a glue.  We took him to the doctor and we removed the contact and he was given high powered ointment and eye drops.  We were monitoring his redness and watering o his eye and if it did not go away; we would have underwent surgery the next day to drain his cornea.  We had to stop patching completely and keep his contact out for a week.  During that week we noticed that his depth perception and focus took a turn for the worse.  We then started to patch again, which is not as easy as it sounds.  Before Jaxen got his infection we were pros at getting 6 hours.  Since then patching even 1 hour is the most hardest thing we struggle with daily.  We have tried extra floor play, going to the store and just wasting time.  All of that does not seem to help distract him.  Jaxen is a pro at sneaking his hand right past and grabs the patch and off it comes.
-December, was a busy month as Jaxen turned ONE!!!!! There were no vision concerns just trying to keep patching!!
So I will close with; It was a rough year and I have learned a lot, extensive knowledge about vision and research.  You may not know what someone is struggling with, so be nice and kind to one another!
